Background- The June 19th holiday was originated in Texas during the Civil War period, when the news of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln in September 1862, to become effective on January 1, 1863, did not reach Texas slaves until June 19, 1865. The slaves immediately left the plantations, congregated in the cities and began celebrating their freedom by praying, feasting, dancing and singing. It later inspired the 13th and 14th Amendments of our United States Constitution.

Juneteenth started as a community picnic in the park. It has grown and become recognized nationally as a National Convention and Expo. More Americans are starting to know what Juneteenth represents. City Officials, Corporate Sponsors, Volunteers, and the local communities were among our many participants.
